I've been a client of Dr. Shaw's for decades. In the early to mid 80's and again from the mid-90's to now 2009. A more professional, compassionate and consumately dedicated individual you'll be hard pressed to find. God has endowed him with a unique gift in his abilities to relate to the animals under his care. Even not withstanding his own trials, he gives his utmost to his patients...and their owners as well. I can only hope he continues for a long time to come.

In my opinion, the most dedicated, compassionate vet on the face of the earth.
I lived in Sumter for 8 yrs. 30 years ago when my former husband was stationed at Shaw Air Force Base.I had taken in a stray dog and had her for 4 yrs. when she was hit by a car and managed to drag herself home(to this day I don't know how)with 2 broken front legs at 11:00pm.I had taken her to the base vet for shots but they did not offer any other services and I didn't know where to call, especially at that hour. I checked the phone book and Dr. Shaw was the closest to where I lived so I called his office and explained to the answering service what had happened and did let them know that my dog was not a regular patient. Within minutes, Dr. Shaw returned my call and said he could be at the office in 20 minutes. I was there in 15 and he was waiting for me in the parking lot! He took time to talk to me and "Missy" until she was calm enough to treat, then he mended her legs and a gash in her head and had to keep her overnight since she would need to be sedated to prevent her from trying to stand on the broken legs until they set.I didn't leave his office until after 1am. She ended up staying 2 nites and Dr. Shaw was more than willing to arrange a payment plan. From that night on, he was the vet I would take my pets to for shots or anything else.
Then, a year later, my neighbor's cat was hit and killed by a school bus. The cat had recently had kittens and she found one under the house 2 days after the mother was killed. She was not allowed to have it in the house so I kept it for her and fed it evaporated milk with an eye-dropper. After more than a day, the poor kitty was still meowing constantly and fearing it may sick, I called Dr. Shaw's office to see if he could take a look at it and,if necessary, euthenize it.I was told to bring it right in. After Dr. Shaw checked him, he showed me how to properly feed, burp and generally care for him. Then, when I went to the counter to pay, there sat 3 cans of kitten formula, 3 nursing bottles, vitamins and a book on how to care for orphaned kittens. When I asked the receptionist how much I owed and I think she saw the panicked look on my face, she went in the back to check with the Dr. When she came back, she said "Dr. Shaw says $1 should cover it." My eyes welled up and I knew that he gave me a break simply because of his love for animals as he had been in the exam room for 15-20 min. and could have charged me for a full office visit. I have always remembered his true compassion and although I have lived in 2 other states since then and have had other pets, I have yet to find a vet that compares or even comes close to the comfort I felt when Dr. Shaw cared for my beloved pets. I only wish I were closer so I could have him as my vet for my present baby "Lola" but Easton, PA to Sumter, SC is a bit much of a drive for vet visits. I'm glad to see he's still in the business of caring for animals and wish him the best. Fondly, Donna Detweiler
